About us

The MASS Lab is the flagship mass spectrometric analytical laboratory in the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences at the University of Manitoba.

We are dedicated to providing analytical solutions to fellow academics, government labs, and industry alike. Whether we partner with you in pure collaborations, operate via fee-for-service, or a hybrid of the two, we will do our best to get you the answers you need.

Our team is comprised of decades of experience in all areas of agricultural, food, and environmental sciences. We thrive on providing fully validated answers to analytical challenges in complex matrices.

Dr. Farenhorst's natural science research focuses on the fate and distribution of current-use pesticides in soil and water, and particularly on chemical sorption by matrices such as soils, sediments, plants, humic substances, microplastics and biochars.

Both her natural and social science research focuses on drinking water quality in First Nations reserves, including monitoring for bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes in tap water, and conducting surveys to better understand the impact of poor drinking water quality on First Nations.

In addition, her team developed the Faculty Workplace Climate Survey that is administered to natural sciences and engineering faculty from universities across Canada, and has advanced Canada’s understanding of gender inequities experienced by academics.
Dr. Brown is a mass spectrometric method development specialist. He focuses on small molecule quantitation using LC-MS/MS, GC-MS/MS, GC-MSD with headspace analysis, and FT-NIR. He is currently focused on pesticides and UV filters in freshwater environments, including the Lake Winnipeg beaches, Winnipeg wastewaters, and outdoor swimming pools.

His current and past experience includes passive sampling of perfluorinated compounds in indoor air and the impact on children's health, human pharmaceutical metabolites in engineered waters, nutrient loading into the Red River basin with ECCC, and federal compliance for cannabis producers.

Dr. Brown is also an instructor of several courses at the University of Manitoba including Advanced Issues in the Environment and Human Health with the Department of Environment and Geography.
Dr. Janzen is the Research Development Manager at the Richardson Centre for Food Technology and Research (RCTFR) at the University of Manitoba.

The RCFTR partners with the food industry in collaborative research and pre-commercial development activities, focusing on advancing food quality and human nutrition through traditional and innovative food processing techniques.

Dr. Janzen is the go-to scientist for a wide range of services including milling and dry fractionation, analytical testing, tablet and capsule filling, oil extraction, food product development, protein quality, and contaminant analysis.
